Other than Maharashtra, Shivaji’s birthday is also celebrated in Goa and Karnataka.

Plays and dramas depicting the life of Shivaji are enacted in various places. In addition, speeches are given by Government officials on Shivaji’s life and his relevance in modern India.

Shivaji Jayanti is a holiday In India that celebrates the birth of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and is celebrated both on February 19th and on Phalgun Krishna Paksha Tritiya (the 3rd dark phase day of the Hindu month Phalgun). It is a restricted holiday in most parts of India – meaning that most offices and government buildings remain open across the country – but is an official statewide holiday in Maharashta (schools and government buildings are closed in this state).

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born February 19th, 1630 in Shivneri Fort, or what is now known as Maharashtra, India. At the age of 16, he seized the Toma fort and by the time he was 17 had seized the Rajgad and Kondana forts. His aggressive tactics continued until 1676. By this time he had significantly expanded the Maratha Empire through the use of guerrilla tactics. Today, he is regarded as both a great warrior and civil administrator.
