星雲大師，一九二七年生，江蘇江都人，為臨濟宗第四十八代傳人。

一九四九年初來台，一九六七年創建佛光山，先後在世界各地創設二百餘所寺院道場，致力推廣文化、教育、慈善等事業；於海內外設立十六所佛教學院，培養佛門專業人才；創辦普門中學、均一、均頭中小學、南華大學、佛光大學、美國西來大學、澳洲南天大學，並創辦人間福報、人間衛視，以推廣社會教育。

一九八五年卸下佛光山宗長一職，四處雲遊弘法，十九九一年創辦國際佛光會，推動「佛光普照三千界，法水長流五大洲」的人間佛教理念。

佛光山總本山位於台灣高雄市大樹區，由五座山嶺連綿而成，呈蓮花瓣狀，建築群的布局，為中國四大名山的縮影，開山四十餘年來，已成為台灣最大的佛教道場與世界公認的佛教聖地，海內外三十三個國家，共有二百餘所別分院，國際佛光會會員更遍及全球五大洲。
