******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF GRUNGE MUSIC ********************

Grunge music or Seattle sound is a musical subcategory of alternative rock which came out in the mid-1980s, particularly in Washington state’s Seattle area in the United States.

Paul Ramball has mentioned the term “grunge” in an NME article back in 1978 to refer to mainstream guitar rock. However, the term has been attributed to Mark Arm, the vocalist of a Seattle-based band called Green River who was has been quoted as saying "Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit!" in a 1981 letter. Arm eventually clarified that he first heard about the term from “someone else.” In the course of time, Grunge evolved and came to be known as a cross between punk and heavy metal which originated from the Seattle music scene.

With strong influences from heavy metal and hardcore punk, Grunge is typically defined by a “sludgy guitar sound” and uses a lot of high level distortion, as well as feedback and fuzz effects. Grunge music generally does not use keyboards, and it combines punks lyrical “concerns” and raw sound with heavy metal’s slower tempos, complex instrumentation, and dissonant harmonies.
