This short, rounded cap, known as a taqiyah, is worn to emulate Mohammad's followers and is often worn during prayer. It can also be worn underneath a turban.
Although women also cover their heads in Islam, they do not wear turbans. The female equivalent is known as a hijab, meaning curtain or cover. This headscarf forms part of the women’s obligation to dress modestly, a tradition which is seen as particularly important public where, in strict Muslim culture, only the hands and face are visible.
