About Radio FM 90s

Do you know the difference between here/hear, buy/by, one/won, which/witch, there/their/they're? above mentioned all words are nothing but just homophones.

Homographs, Homonyms, and Homophones are the most confusing part of English learning.

⭕ What is a Homophone? ⭕
Each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins, or spelling, for example, new and knew.

"homophones can cause confusion and people often use the wrong one in error"

Homophone Example - affect effect

Affect: Use affect to indicate influence: The medicine did not affect her the way the doctor had hoped.

Effect: Use effect as a noun: The new medicine had negative side effects. (Note: effect can sometimes be used as a verb meaning to cause/achieve or to bring about – as in "The magician effected his escape with a false door" – but this is mostly a technical term and not used very often.)

⭕ What is a homonym?⭕
Each of two or more words having the same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings and origins.

"Students often struggle with homonyms"

Homonym example - fair
Meaning 1 - Fair -- appropriate and reasonable.
Meaning 2 - Fair -- pale; not dark.
Meaning 3 - Fair -- (of weather) bright.
Meaning 4 - Fair -- an entertainment.

⭕ what is Homograph?⭕

Homographs are words that have the same spelling but different meanings, whether they're pronounced the same or not. Bass (the fish, rhymes with class) and bass (the instrument, rhymes with ace) are homographs.

Homograph Example - Absent

Meaning 1- Absent [‘æbsənt] (adjective) -- not present | lacking.
Meaning 2 - Absent [æb’sent] (verb) -- to not be in a certain place.
