******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF INDIE ROCK MUSIC ********************
Indie rock is a 1980’s alternative rock genre that was put together in the United States and United Kingdom around the same period. It is a widely-encompassing genre, including jangle pop, baroque pop, C86, lo-fi, indie pop, math rock, noise rock and several others.
This wide range was attributed to the autonomy enjoyed by bands at that time which allowed them to explore and draw inspiration from a variety of style and influences (like rock, country, psychedelia, and punk). In Allmusic’s words, Indie rock has “varying musical approaches [not] compatible with mainstream tastes.”
Relative to previous rock genres, Indie rock is unique in having a higher share of female artists led by the Riot grrrl movement. This was exemplified by bands such as Bratmobile, Huggy Bear, 7 Year Bitch, Bikini Kill, and Team Dresch. Aside from the US and the UK, a good number of countries had their respective Indie rock scene, where local Indie rock bands gained considerable popularity.
