J Balvin nació como José Álvaro Osorio el 7 de mayo de 1985 en la ciudad de Medellin, Colombia. Es hijo de José Álvaro Osorio —quién además es su mánager— y Alba Mery Vásquez y tiene una hermana menor llamada Carolina, quien es modelo. Balvin comenzó a hacer música desde muy temprana edad, interesándose por géneros como el hip hop, a los 14 años. Luego de terminar la escuela, viajó a Oklahoma, como parte de un intercambio cultural, además de vivir en un tiempo en Nueva York, donde afianzó su gusto por el género urbano. En su etapa de estudiante de secundaria hizo parte de varias bandas de rock, que, a pesar de no tener nombre, tocaban canciones de Nirvana, Metallica y Enanitos Verdes. más adelante, mientras estudiaba las carreras de negocios internacionales y comunicación social en la Universidad EAFIT perteneció a la banda de rap MDL Crew, —actualmente llamada Universidad de la calle— por lo que interrumpió sus estudios en el séptimo semestre.

Ya en 2004 lanza su primera producción como solista, una canción titulada «Panas», la cual habla de la amistad y con la que ingresó al mercado del reguetón. Dos años más tarde lanza otras dos canciones, tituladas «Sencillo» y «La playa». En 2009, lanzaría el sencillo «Ella me cautivo», que le dio un reconocimiento nacional; convirtiéndose en artista revelación del 2009 por la emisora La Mega de RCN Radio, así como artista de verano de Los 40 Principales y compositor revelación por la gobernación de Antioquia.
