هو عبد الباسط بن محمد بن سليم بن عبد الصمد من أكبر و أشهر مرتلي القرآن الكريم.
ولد الشيخ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد سنة 1927 م في مدينة "أرمنت" التابعة لمحافظة قنا جنوب مصر، و قد كان والده الشيخ محمد عبد الصمد من كبار مرتلي القرآن الكريم في قريته.

حفظ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد القرآن في كتاب بلدته على يد الشيخ الأمير و درس الروايات مع الشيخ محمد سليم. و قد أتم حفظ القرآن في سن العاشرة.

أصبح الشيخ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد سريعا من كبار المرتلين جنوب مصر (في الصعيد). لكن الحدث الذي غير مجرى حياته تمثل في زيارته لمسجد السيدة زينب سنة 1950 م، خلال الاحتفالات بميلاد السيدة الفاضلة.

كان يشارك في إحياء هذه الاحتفالات مشايخ كبار مثل عبد الفتاح الشعشاعي، مصطفى إسماعيل، عبد العظيم زاهر، أبو العينين شعيشع و آخرون. و قد قرأ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد آيات من سورة الأحزاب خلال عشر دقائق، و كان ذلك كافيا لإثارة انتباه الجموع الغفيرة التي لم تكف عن الهتاف و ما فتئت تطلب من الفتى أن يتم تلاوته إلى أن استوفى أكثر من ساعة و نصف من القراءة.التحق الشيخ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد بالإذاعة المصرية سنة 1951 م، و قد كانت أول تلاوة له على أمواج الإذاعة لسورة فاطر.

تم تعيين الشيخ في السنة الموالية قارئا لمسجد الإمام الشافعي ثم بعده لمسجد الإمام الحسين سنة 1985م حيث كان خلفا للشيخ محمود علي البنا.

ترك الشيخ عبد الصمد العديد من التسجيلات لتلاواته القرآنية هذا بالإضافة إلى القرآن المرتل و المجود.و قد جال في العديد من دول العالم ملبيا الدعوات للتسجيلات الإذاعية، للحفلات الدينية و للقراءات في المساجد في كل من المملكة العربية السعودية ( حيث أدى فريضة الحج سنة 1952م و تلا القرآن في مكة و المدينة)، سوريا، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، المغرب، الهند، باكستان، فلسطين (حيث قرأ القرآن الكريم بالمسجد الأقصى و المسجد الإبراهيمي)، فرنسا، انجلترا، الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية و دول أخرى في كل بقاع العالم.

تم تكريم الشيخ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد و تتويجه بعدة أوسمة منها وسام الاستحقاق من سوريا، وسام الأرز من لبنان، الوسام الذهبي من ماليزيا و غيرها من الجوائز القادمة من المغرب و السنغال. و قد تم تكريمه و تخليد ذكراه حتى بعد مماته من طرف الرئيس المصري حسني مبارك بمناسبة الاحتفال بليلة القدر سنة 1990م.

توفي الشيخ عبد الباسط عبد الصمد في 30 نونبر 1988م أن أصيب بمرض السكري و الكسل الكبدي. و قد خلد وفاته الملايين من المسلمين في جميع بقاع العالم.

And it has been honored and perpetuate his memory even after his death by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the occasion of celebrating the night of fate in 1990.

Sheikh Abdul Basit Abdul Samad, died on 30 November 1988 that suffered diabetes and liver laziness. And he has immortalized the death of millions of Muslims all over the world.
